The Blue Jays have turned bullpen days into their own art forms. They pulled it off again in Wednesday’s 3-0 win over the Royals at Rogers Centre, potentially the last time they’ll need to scramble before their rotation is full again. The win keeps the Blue Jays on pace with the Guardians for the final American League Wild Card spot, but that gap sits at three games now with a crowded field around them. This is what mattered most: **1\. Sweet redemption for Nathan Lukes** In Tuesday’s series opener, Nathan Lukes recorded the final out of the game trying to stretch a single into a double, completely unnecessary as the tying run was still on deck in Vladimir Guerrero Jr. It felt so out of character for Lukes, who is typically a fundamentally sound player, but it’s the byproduct of everyone trying to do *just a bit* too much with this offense struggling. Less than 24 hours later, he made up for it. “I talked to him today and, as only Lukey can, he said he was sorry,” said manager John Schneider. “I told him, ‘Dude, the most important game is tonight. Don’t worry about it.’ It’s pretty fitting that he had the big hit today.” That apology featured a big hug for Schneider, too, and Lukes’ teammates felt it. “There were a few guys that came up to me and said that I was going to come up big tonight just to make up for what happened,” Lukes said. “I guess you can't screw up baserunning if you just hit the ball over the fence. So this is great.” Lukes launched a three-run shot in the bottom of the fourth, finally breaking this offense through after some missed opportunities earlier in the game. This was the exact type of pitch Lukes handles so well, too, a low breaking ball that he dropped down and used his legs to drive. Now that everything has balanced out, we can get back to viewing Lukes as the player he truly is, which is a valuable piece of this team. Left-handed pitching has been awfully hard on Lukes this season, but he’s hit right-handed pitching well and should still be in the lineup against nearly every righty down the stretch. **2\. Big pitch, big performance from Chad Dallas** The Blue Jays brought in Chad Dallas with the bases loaded, two outs and veteran Salvador Perez at the plate in the third inning. No pressure. Dallas struck out Perez to escape the jam, though, including a couple of whiffs that weren’t even close. The right-hander gave the Blue Jays 2 2/3 innings of flawless relief, striking out four to get this bullpen game to the middle innings.
